Piecing, Quilting, and Appliqué with Aurifil thread by Amanda Murphy

Hi there everyone!  Thanks for Brewer for inviting me back here on the Brewer blog to talk about something I've really been enjoying this year... my Aurifil Thread Collections!

Both of my collections coordinate with all my fabrics and patterns to date (plus the new one that will debut at Spring Market) for maximized sales!  The Piecing and Quilting Collection contains 11 spools of Aurifil 50 wt. for piecing and quilting plus a spool of monofilament.  Aurifil's monofilament pairs perfectly with 50 wt. in the bottom with no tension adjustment needed! All my quilts were stitched on my BERNINA 780 and quilted on the BERNINA Q24.  In regards to my appliqué, I always use the Blanket stitch #1329.   I start at a 2.1 stitch width and 2.4 stitch length.  I might adjust a little based on the size of the motifs.

Sewing Room Sampler was pieced with Aurifil 50 wt. and quilted with Aurifil monofilament with Aurifil 50 wt. in the bobbin on the BERNINA Q24

Starstruck was pieced and quilted with Aurifil 50 wt. thread.

My Appliqué Collection contains 8 spools of Aurifil 28 wt. and 2 spots of 12 wt.

As some of you might know, I LOVE using heavier weight threads for machine appliqué.  It creates a beautiful ridge on the edge of the shapes and, with a blanket stitch, gives machine appliqué a beauty of its own.  And having them in a collection gives customers (and shops) the opportunity to try them in a very affordable way!

Flourishes mini quilts/pillows, featuring the heavier weight Aurifil threads from my Aurifil Appliqué Collection.

You can use the 12 wt. threads to create stems using hand embroidery or even the triple stitch on your machine!

The triple-stitch here is executed in Aurifil 12 wt. thread!

In "S" is for Sew I used my embroidery machine in combination with heavier weight threads make appliqué in the hoop!

These threads show up again in my Northern Lights minis featuring Nordic Holiday, my fabric collection from Contempo shipping this spring!  The Northern Lights pattern is shipping now and includes an SVG download code!

A sneak peek of another Nordic Holiday patterns, Nordic Row Sampler (- quilted with you-guessed-it - Aurifil thread!), available for pre-order and coming soon.

I recently created a whitework quilt using many of the the motifs from my Sewing Room Quilting Collection stitched out on the BERNINA Q24.  There are 28 spools of threads in this quilt.  )You can learn how I did it on the Art and Stitch website.)  Call me obsessed but one can never have enough Aurifil thread!

Thanks for letting me share my work. Shop owners are the heart and soul of the industry.  I hope that has given you some ideas for how you can use different weights of thread to make dynamic store samples and generate add-on sales!

Happy quilting!
Amanda
