Hello! I’m Jen from Grainline Studio and I’m here to tell you a bit more about our business making sewing patterns.
If you aren’t already familiar with Grainline Studio, we are an independent pattern company located in Chicago, IL that creates women’s sewing patterns for what we like to describe as elevated basics. Our patterns are meant for easy everyday wearing and we pride ourselves on our professional drafting, grading, and instructions.
Back in 2009 when I started the Grainline blog I was working as a patternmaker in Chicago. I would receive a sketch from the designer and draft a pattern for the garment based on that. I loved it but also felt like I needed a creative outlet to explore my own designs and ideas, and that’s how Grainline was born! After a few months of posting garments I would draft and sew for myself I began getting requests for the patterns. Our second pattern, the Scout, is still our most popular design and can be worn in so many ways on so many shapes and sizes.
After a few years of simply selling PDF designs we launched our paper pattern range in the summer of 2014 with the Alder Dress and it’s been an exciting ride ever since!
We are now a 4 person team working on Chicago’s Northwest Side and take pride in every aspect of the business. All of our patterns are meticulously tested and illustrated for ease of use and to ensure the best outcome for our customers. We aim to make patterns that people can make over and over again and become wardrobe staples. It’s still so exciting after all these years seeing people post photos of the garments they’ve made from our patterns!
Thanks so much Brewer, for having me on the blog to talk a bit about our patterns!
